| jMbira: Measuring only 5.25”W x 6.5” long, this is a perfect gift for a child or adult with very small hands. |
In the spring of 2004, Joroma Horsburgh, a physical and massage aromatherapist in St Ives, New South Wales, Australia purchased one of our instruments, which she liked very much. Several months later, Jo returned with a rather unusual request – a child-sized mbira. I had just returned from Zimbabwe with a fresh batch of mbiras and I just happened to have one very very small instrument – small enough for a child or an adult with very small hands. I was able to dispatch this instrument (made by Garikai Tirikoti) to Jo who insisted that its small size was ideal for its recipient. The request however got me thinking about just that – child-size mbira. I quickly engaged the “projects” aspect of Zambuko Projects to make this into one – a project to add child-size mbira to our repertoire.
Working
diligently with master mbira maker and musician Lee
Kumbani, we collaborated to make this a reality.
The following limited-edition instruments represent the fruits of that collaboration. Measuring only 5.25”W x 6.5” long, this is a perfect gift for a child or adult with very small hands. Built on medium brown Mukwa sound-board, these mbiras have a gentle but abundantly clear sound. In honor of the source of our inspiration, we have called this the jMbira or simply the jM-series. We hope you enjoy them. You can see the actual size here.
Life should have choices. While some rely on the iPod, others choose the jMbira instead – a gift that is inspirational, spiritual and it not only keeps giving – it keeps educating. We hope you are in the latter category. Enjoy!
